Wallkill Valley Rail Trail to Ulster County Fairgrounds

The Connector Trail and Bridge Project

Project History

Rail Trail Jogger

It is not known who may have been the first to dream of connecting the Rail Trail to the Fairgrounds via a bridge across the Wallkill River.

Perhaps it occurred to a solitary runner on a beautiful summer day.

1991 Town and Village of New Paltz purchase the Rail Trail with assistance of the Wallkill Valley Land Trust
2001 Bob Taylor (Wallkill Valley Land Trust) and Glenn Gidaly (Shingebiss Associates) investigate this project.
They obtain a cost estimate for bridge construction and get conceptual approval from the landowners.
2003 The NYSDOT sponsored New Paltz Transportation-Land Use Project is launched.
2004 A Bicycle/Pedestrian Sub-Committee is formed as part of the Transportation-Land Use Project.
2005 The Bicycle/Pedestrian Sub-Committee recommends construction of a "Multi-Use Path" connecting the Rail Trail with the County Park (Fairgrounds).
2006 The DOT Transportation Enhancement Program could make this dream a reality.
November 2006 The Bridge of Dreams grant is awarded!
