newpaltz.org - Acknowledgements and History of the Site
In June of 1997 Vivian Wadlin, Director of the New Paltz Economic Development Corporation (NPEDC), promoted
the concept of a community website. The previous school year a group of New Paltz High School students
organized a computer club and with their advisor, Patricia L. Johnson, nee Stewart, used early HTML to
create a web page with community information. Students participating were Lauren Croce, Billy Kachmor,
Brian Reid, Jen Stewart, and Kenny Van Alst. It seems hard to believe now but the World Wide Web came into
being only in the fall of 1995. Wadlin approached Johnson (now at BOCES) about a community committee taking
over and developing the web page.
The domain name NewPaltz.org was obtained from Internic with help from BOCES and financed by the NPEDC.
That first committee included Tim Copeland, Christine Downs, Al Marks, Corinne Nyquist, David Trauffer,
Maria Urquidi, Angelo Urrico, Vivian Wadlin and others helping over the years. An offer in 1998 from
James Stanmeyer and Greg Brandow at
Hudson Valley Internet (HVI), then a newly formed Internet service
provider in New Paltz, to host the site at no charge was gratefully accepted.
www.newpaltz.org went live in 1998.
Current committee members are listed on the Current Credits.
Kenneth Wantz has also assisted in the development of this site.
