newpaltz.org - Acknowledgements and History of the Site
In 1995, a group of New Paltz High School students involved in the school's Computer Club, with their advisor, Patricia L. Stewart (now Patricia Johnson), decided to embark on a new project.
They learned HTML and decided to create a web site for the New Paltz community. Students participating were Lauren Croce, Billy Kachmor, Brian Reid, Jen Stewart, and Kenny Van Alst.
Research was completed by the students with the help of the New Paltz Historical Society and the New Paltz High School Library. They worked diligently to complete their project, and it was placed on a server in England, since there were none available here for this purpose. It was later moved to a server at the Mid-Hudson Regional Information Center here in New Paltz.
In late 1996, Vivian Wadlin, then Director of the New Paltz Economic Development Corporation (NPEDC), approached Mrs. Johnson at the Mid-Hudson Regional Information Center about a community committee taking over and further developing the web site. This committe began to meet in January of 1997.
The domain name NewPaltz.org was obtained in 1997 with help from the Mid-Hudson Regional Information Center, and it was hosted by the MHRIC for about a year. It was financed by the NPEDC. That first committee included Tim Copeland, Christine Downs, Al Marks, Corinne Nyquist, David Trauffer, Maria Urquidi, Angelo Urrico, and Vivian Wadlin.
An offer in 1998 from James Stanmeyer and Greg Brandow at Hudson Valley Internet (HVI), then a newly formed Internet service provider in New Paltz, to host the site at no charge was gratefully accepted.
Current committee members are listed on the Home Page.
