After attending the State University of New York at New Paltz and New York University, I taught others how to draw and paint for more than three decades. I taught in Edinburgh, Scotland as a Fulbright Fellow. My work has been exhibited in New York and Europe. Lately, I have been painting the New Paltz landscape and surrounding areas. OIL LANDSCAPE IN THE ROMANTIC STYLE

I believe landscape painting to be a vital and integral
expression in the contemporary art scene. It is
inspired by the past, yet defined by present
environmental realities.Essentially a realist, I
incorporate strong undercurrents of romanticism into my
work. Inthe romantic tradition, I seek to give my
landscapes deep emotional meaning, manipulating them
into emotional dream worlds through subdued brushwork
and diffused light. Although my subjects are largely
familiar local scenes,they serve merely as a framework
or vehicle for expressing the spiritual truths I seek.
The works are largely unpopulated, quiet, still,
emphasizing an inner peace or the spirit of each place.
Aspects of the works indicate inspiration, eternal
life, the passage of time, and the process of nature. I
am inspiried by the ninetheenth century views on
romanticism and communion with nature and by the work
of John Constable, Frederic Church, and Martin Johnson
Heade.

CERAMICS AND LIGHT

I recieved my Bachelor's of Fine Art from Alfred University.  Upon graduation I accepted a position as the art teacher for a small therapeutic high school.  I maintained that position for two years. Currently, I will be attending SUNY New Paltz to pursue a master's degree in ceramics. 
It is fascinating to take a step back to view the evolution of my work and imagine how it could progress.  The information gained from finished work generates ideas that I would have never thought of before.  Therefore, it is the completed work that inspires new designs. 
This is evident in my current body of work, which seeks to integrate two very different materials: ceramics and light.  Although separate for a short period of time, it was only logical that my fascination for both yielded a synthesis of these two mediums.  When activated, the light creates this phenomenon that is truly magical.  Working in such a fashion is very exciting and motivates me towards endless possibilities. Doug Fertig

the 101st Airborne Division he returned to New York and
attended classes at the Art Students League of New York.
Upon graduation he moved upstate to New Paltz where he
has maintained his studio. Publications that have
featured his artwork include Harper's Magazine, The
New York Times, War,Literature and the Arts and Fiction
International. He has exhibited in galleries,
universities and museums throughout the United States.

John A. Wolfe received his undergraduate degree from
Purchase College in Printmaking. He is the recipient of
a Fellowship from the Puffin Foundation. He was awarded
a Graduate Fellowship from Syracuse University where he
presently teaches Printmaking and pursues his own art.
He has exhibited in numerous galleries including HBO
Corporate Gallery in NYC, Atlantic City Gallery and
Museum and the Dorsky Museum at SUNY New Paltz. He is
the son of John D. Wolfe.
